The winners of all 5 divisions have now been decided and how close they were, particularly Division 4 where Basingstoke B won by the narrowest possible difference in game points. Congratulations to all in making the league so keenly contested.
Division 1 - Southampton A; Division 2 - Salisbury A; Division 3 - Winchester A; Division 4 - Basingstoke B; Division 5 - Andover B

Graham Payne has just reported the sad news of the death of Jim Hough on Friday 7th April 2017 aged 79.
He was Winchester Club's Membership Secretary and C team Captain and had played in various teams for the Club for many years.
In his private life, Jim had been Professor of Economics of Education who worked extensively overseas including over 100 missions to developing countries.

Division 1 is now decided with Southampton scrambling (literally) a win in their final match against Hamble to win the league. The result of board one required clarification of the rules from FIDE arbiter, Kevin Thurlow. He ruled that stalemate ends the game and that the (2) moves played afterwards (due to time scramble) are disregarded. So a rather fortunate win for Southampton and unlucky for the University who would have won the league if board one had been lost and the match drawn.
The closest finish to the league I can recall. A good advert for quickplay finishes?!

January grades have been published. All team captains are reminded that these new grades MUST be used for determining board order, as described in the rules.

I thought that I'd start by saying I am very well thank you, and that I hope to be walking amongst you all in my mortal form at the start of the next season.
The reason I am writing today is because of the World Championship match between Magnus Carlsen and Sergei Karjakin currently being played out in New York. The first seven games had all been draws and both players had missed chances to score a victory against their opponent. Tonight saw the eighth game of the match.

The Southampton Chess League fixtures for the 2016-17 season have been loaded (though there is some remaining work to do to load the structure of the cup competitions and rounds, completion dates etc.).
Please also note that in the online Fixtures table for'all fixtures', divison 'X' is used as a one letter code for the Divison 5 Cup.
The div 5 cup fixture on November 1st at Chandlers Ford club (where the away team will be either Winchester C or Andover B) is not yet in the online list.
Please let me know of any other errors of omissions,

A new League History sub-menu has been added under the Home menu.
Its first contribution is from David Drew, including a letter from his brother John, both of which have made a big contribution to local chess since the 1950s, but following the closure of Ordnance Survey club last year have retired from active involvement.
There is an account by David of his chess experiences on this page, including a letter by John about the Ordnance Survey C team.
There is also an article about the visit to Woolston club in 1955 by the eminent Russian Grandmaster Ragozin, with an excellent photo showing many of the prominent local players at that time.

A new facility has been introduced to show all current fixtures known to the website, specific to each club. It is hope that this will aid team captains in arranging matches, and enable players to easily see current fixture dates relevant to them.
The new facility is available from the Fixtures menu.
There is an 'All Fixtures' entry under the fixtures menu, and also an entry for each club.
The information will be updated promptly when new reschedule information is received, but please remember your team captain may sometimes have more recent information, so please check with him if in doubt.

Fraser McLeod has recently emailed team captains and club secretaries with a printable blank scorecard .PDF document.
The card is available on this website's menus via Results/Scorecards/'Blank Scorecard for Printing'.
Using it you can print to obtain three matchcards on one page of A4 paper or card – we have run low of stocks and our supplier has gone out of business hence this interim alternative.
If you intend to post the card, you can print double sided on card (Malcolm’s address appears on page 2).
Otherwise you can just print the first page, on paper or card, for use on the match night.
john_d - Mon, 28/09/2015 - 7:25pm
Scorecards entry is ready for the new season (first match is tonight).
Please note that to use scorecards, you must have registered for an account with this website, and be set up with appropriate permissions.
The menu to use is now called "Result Entry" - if you don't see it, and you're a captain or may serve as an acting captain, please let me know and I'll set up the necessary permissions.
Under the "Result Entry" menu, choose the appropriate competition (either a division or the Rob Cup/Plate)
It will then ask you to select a fixture from the list for that competition, and whether the match was defaulted.
When that form has been submitted, another page will be shown where the details for the match can be entered.
john_d - Tue, 15/09/2015 - 4:23pm
All current fixtures initially issued have been set up within the online system so as to support the results system and online scorecards for 2015-16.
They can be viewed via the Results menu for each division, and for the Robertson Cup/Plate.
Please notify me of any issues / omissions.
