Local Tournaments (including the British!)

Entries have been included in the Events menu for:

  • The British Chess Championships in July (at Bournemouth - well done to Dorset Chess for facilitating that!)
  • The Castle Chess "10th Portsmouth" tournament (at Fareham) in October
  • The Dorset Open in December.

Dorset Rapidplay 2016 (at Ringwood)

This event was held last Sunday, 13th March , and was once again superbly organised by Mike Jay and Martin Simons.

Keith Gregory of Fareham Chess Club was the winner.

Results are here.

League History Article by David and John Drew

A new League History sub-menu has been added under the Home menu.

Its first contribution is from David Drew, including a letter from his brother John, both of which have made a big contribution to local chess since the 1950s, but following the closure of Ordnance Survey club last year have retired from active involvement.

There is an account by David of his chess experiences on this page, including a letter by John about the Ordnance Survey C team.

There is also an article about the visit to Woolston club in 1955 by the eminent Russian Grandmaster Ragozin, with an excellent photo showing many of the prominent local players at that time.

Forthcoming Tournaments

The following tournaments are being held locally early in the New Year.

Castle 4th Winchester tournament January 8th - 10th 2016

Castle 9th Portsmouth (at Fareham) tournament February 19th-21st

Please follow the links for the relevant entries in the Events Menu for further details of each tournament, with links to entry forms etc.

Les Allen

I'm sad to report the passing of Les Allen of Southampton chess club, who died peacefully earlier today.

Les was a long-standing member of the club and played regularly in the league in its top divisions.

He was well-liked and respected by those who knew him and will be missed.

Southampton Rapidplay

This year's Southampton Rapidplay tournament will be taking place on Saturday 21st November.

The tournament consists of 6 rounds of ECF graded rapidplay games, and those who came last year will agree that we had a good time.

If you would like more information, or wish to enter please visit the website:

New Facility: Fixtures by Club

A new facility has been introduced to show all current fixtures known to the website, specific to each club.  It is hope that this will aid team captains in arranging matches, and enable players to easily see current fixture dates relevant to them.

The new facility is available from the Fixtures menu.

There is an 'All Fixtures' entry under the fixtures menu, and also an entry for each club.

The information will be updated promptly when new reschedule information is received, but please remember your team captain may sometimes have more recent information, so please check with him if in doubt.

Blank Scorecard for Printing

Fraser McLeod has recently emailed team captains and club secretaries with a printable blank scorecard .PDF document.

The card is available on this website's menus via Results/Scorecards/'Blank Scorecard for Printing'.

Using it you can print to obtain three matchcards on one page of A4 paper or card – we have run low of stocks and our supplier has gone out of business hence this interim alternative.

If you intend to post the card, you can print double sided on card (Malcolm’s address appears on page 2).

Otherwise you can just print the first page, on paper or card, for use on the match night.

Scorecard Changes for the new Season

Scorecards entry is ready for the new season (first match is tonight).

Please note that to use scorecards, you must have registered for an account with this website, and be set up with appropriate permissions.

The menu to use is now called "Result Entry" - if you don't see it, and you're a captain or may serve as an acting captain, please let me know and I'll set up the necessary permissions.

Under the "Result Entry" menu, choose the appropriate competition (either a division or the Rob Cup/Plate)

It will then ask you to select a fixture from the list for that competition, and whether the match was defaulted.

When that form has been submitted, another page will be shown where the details for the match can be entered.

Forthcoming Local Tournaments

Please note the forthcoming local tournaments, all of which are popular:

the Castle Chess 8th "Portsmouth" tournament (at Fareham) next weekend (Friday 25th September to Sunday 27th inclusive)

Hampshire Congress, held in Eastleigh College Friday 6th November to Sunday 8th November.

Southampton (Individual) Rapidplay - a one day Rapidplay tournament consisting of 6 rounds, open to all chess players.

Further details of all these tournaments are available via the Events menu.

Fixtures For 2015-16 available via the Results Menu

All current fixtures initially issued have been set up within the online system so as to support the results system and online scorecards for 2015-16.

They can be viewed via the Results menu for each division, and for the Robertson Cup/Plate.

Please notify me of any issues / omissions.

League Rules

Revised league rules are available from the Home, League Rules section of the website.

The main changes to note are in eligibility (rule 5c) and the season has been extended by two weeks.

Fixtures for 2015-16

Please use the Fixtures menu above to access a downloadable file of all League fixtures as at the start of the season.

A more convenient updateable list will be made available as soon as possible.

Menu Changes etc. in Preparation for New Season

Some menu changes have been carried out in preparation for the new season.

Results for last season are now available from a '2014-15' sub-menu.

The main division menus for this season just show the empty tables, populated with the teams agreed at the AGM, assuming for the moment that they'll be the teams at the start of the season. Fixtures will be loaded (when available) as soon as possible.

The menu for scorecard entry has been renamed "Result Entry" (formerly 'Scorecards') to avoid confusion with the Scorecards sub-menu which can display scorecards.

Please report any glitches.

Hampshire Congress 2015

This popular tournament returns to Eastleigh during the weekend Friday 6th to Sunday 8th November.

The event will, once again, be held at Eastleigh College.

Please see the entry form for further details.  The form will continue to be available via the tournament entry under the "Events" menu and directly from the Hampshire Chess website.

2014-15 New Grades are Out

The ECF grades following the 2014-15 season have been published (as normal timed more or less timed to be available for the start of the British Championship).

The grading details are available via the Grading menu on the ECF website, and should also be available for each Club in the Southampton League from a link on the Clubs page (via the Clubs menu above).
